Monday 9/25, evening at the Coliseum, the OUSD Honor Band will be playing the national anthem before the A’s game. This is significant because they did the same thing last September 20 and set off a national firestorm because they took a knee during the song.

9/29th-30th Inaugural Northern California Autism Symposium Brings Research, Advocacy Experts to Northern California-In partnership with The Yellow Door, Regional & Continuing Education at California State University, Chico will present the Inaugural Northern California Autism Symposium on Sept. 29 and 30 on the University campus. The program will include concurrent sessions and a keynote address for professionals and parents/guardians of individuals and children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Session topics include family relationship building, behavior modification, whole health, incorporating social skills in movement activities, and teaching motor skills at home, among others.
9/30 – The Bay Area Parent Leadership Action Network will host by invitation our second regional Bay Area Family Engagement Convening on Saturday, September 30, 2017. The main purpose of this convening is to bring together organizations from across the Bay Area to assess progress (successes, gaps, and challenges) in creating family engagement and organizing in cities regionally. 10/2 Edna Brewer Morning Tours 2017-2018– If you are a parent or guardian of an upcoming 6th-grader, please join us for a tour of Edna Brewer Middle School. Come and learn about the academic and extracurricular programs that make our school a top choice for Oakland families. You will visit classrooms and the campus, followed by a Q&A session. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of Brewer administrative staff, parents of current students, and a panel of 6th-8th grade students.
10/2-10/6, 2017 Latinx Literature read in-In a diverse city like Oakland, our students need opportunities to see themselves—and all of their classmates—in the books they read. To honor Latinx Heritage Month, we are hosting a citywide appreciation of Latinx writers and illustrators. From, schools across Oakland will host volunteer read-alouds in classrooms, Family Literacy Nights, cross-grade buddy reading, and more.
10/5th “Education for All: Serving California’s Most Vulnerable Children.” Edsource’s annual conference looking at what schools and communities can do to ensure that all students succeed, especially in the wake of California’s landmark reforms and how current federal policies may undercut them. A major goal of the symposium will be to look at successful strategies to break down silos in how schools serve these populations, and to create schools as “safe havens,” not just for students from immigrant backgrounds, but for all students.

Some event goals include beginning the conversation with Johnson-Trammell about key matters impacting Black students such as the lack of equity and service to our children in literacy, math, cultural identity, school policing, nutrition, teacher’s racial bias and more. We will discuss potential support and growth opportunities in the AAMA and Black Girls Initiatives, Ethnic Studies, Black Teachers Project, etc.
10/22 – The Greatest Show (& Tell!) in the East Bay Returns for its 8th Year in 2017
The East Bay Mini Maker Faire, which takes place in the Temescal district of Oakland, has become a major annual event in the San Francisco Bay Area, drawing nearly 7,000 attendees last year. It mirrors the giant “flagship” Maker Faire in San Mateo, but more focused on local projects and hands-on making. The East Bay Mini Maker Faire is organized and run by parent volunteers from Park Day School, which hosts the event on its four-acre campus and the adjacent campus of Studio One Arts Center. This event is perfect for artists, makers, educators, and innovators and given its scale, ideal for the whole family.

Huber was an Education for Change student, and is now an Education for Change teacher in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland. He and his family represent Oakland at its best, and in the early hours of Friday, September 8th, they awoke to their home on fire. Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but you can imagine the pain, stress, frustration, and anger in seeing your family home on fire.
