Oakland Middle School Principal Honored by National Group – Principal Cliff Hong at Roosevelt Middle School in Oakland is receiving an educator leadership award from the Coalition for Community Schools.

The Past, Present, and Future of Activism for Black Families in Oakland; A Conversation with the NAACP – FEATURED PARTNER: The Oakland NAACP has been a critical ally for Black families. We are hosting an intergenerational conversation focused on setting a historical frame for Educational Activism in Oakland.

Roosevelt’s Well Deserved Recognition and a Look at my Last Visit Where Adults Dreamed Big and Kids Were Learning to Dream Bigger – Great School Voices – Cliff Hong, and the entire Roosevelt community received their due recognition last week when Principal Hong received a prestigious leadership award for his work building community and Roosevelt and improving outcomes.

‘Hail day’ at Oakland high school prevents students, teachers from attending – Skyline High School students reveled in the closest thing to a snow day they’re likely to experience.

A Better Enrollment Process, a Frustrating Enrollment Season, and the Deeper Problem it Signifies – Great School Voices – This was a historic year for public school enrollment in Oakland, but not everyone is happy. Parents in Oakland had better access and information about the public schools than ever. Families also participated in the district and charter open enrollment at historic levels.

Towards A Better Abuser List; And ending a “Pass the Trash” Mentality at Schools – Great School Voices – I know and have worked with child abusers, and I also know the wrongly accused.

More kids are getting access to pre-K in California, but it’s largely quantity over quality – More state leaders are putting funding into preschool programs, but the quality of those programs isn’t keeping pace with the quantity, according to a new report.

African-American students would get extra aid under California’s K-12 funding formula in proposal before Legislature – A bill by Assemblywoman Shirley Weber would modify the Local Control Funding Formula to add money for the lowest-performing student group; it also could violate the law barring preferential treatment based on race or ethnicity.

Very. And that sentiment is growing. Nearly two-thirds — 64 percent — of likely voters in a new survey called education “very important,” an increase from 58 percent four years ago.
