Agency by Design Teacher Fellow Applications Now Open!

Agency by Design Oakland is gathering a 2018-19 cohort of Oakland educators to participate in a professional learning community focused on learner-centered practice through maker-centered learning. The core of the experience is teacher action research, in which educators lead their own inquiry cycles, dependent on their interests and students’ needs. Fellows will gain an understanding of how to design for the development of agency. Because these practices are relevant, adaptable, and powerful for all grade levels and disciplines, fellows need not teach in any sort of “maker” classroom.

Beginning June 2018 and concluding May 2019, the Agency by Design Oakland fellowship is open to all Oakland public school educators, both district and charter, along with a limited number of Oakland private school educator spots. All applications are due by 5pm on Sunday, May 13; accepted applicants will be notified by Friday, May 25th.  Find out more and apply HERE.

Join Agency by Design Oakland in conversations with Oakland Fellows. Experience how teacher action research into Maker-Centered Learning is transforming classrooms and schools in Oakland. Breakfast will be served, followed by an engaging morning of interactive presentations, ignite talks, and hands-on workshops. More information HERE.

How you can help

Help ICS survive the OUSD budget cuts Oakland Unified is facing another enormous budget shortfall. District level budget cuts are being shouldered by teachers and families, with each school being asked to cut on average $120 per student. What this means for many schools is an IMMEDIATE LOSS of after-school programs, support staff,  access to technology, field trips, and many of the enrichment activities that make their schooling experience enjoyable and equitable. At schools in Oakland’s wealthier neighborhoods, these cuts will be offset by parent donations and annual fundraisers that bring in an average of $300,000 per year.  At flatland schools, populated predominantly by students of color, these cuts will be felt by teachers and children, and they will be felt deeply. Please click here to help.

Ms. Zissis, from Sankofa Elementary, needs iPads for her speech students. An iPad would be a great supplemental therapy tool. Learn more about similar projects from Oakland teachers that still need funding. GO will match your contribution!
