Oakland, CA — In the middle of planning for an opening of school campuses in the spring 2021 semester, OUSD is also focused on next school year. One of the major milestones for students and families in the District’s open enrollment system is receiving their offers for OUSD elementary, middle and high schools across the city. On Thursday, March 11, the OUSD Enrollment Office is sending offers to the incoming and rising students.

All told, the Enrollment Office is sending out roughly 7,000 offers for students in kindergarten and 6th and 9th grades. More than 75% of students who applied for grades K/6/9 will receive an offer to their first choice school, and more than 95% will receive one of their top three choices. Families have two weeks, until March 25, 2021 to accept or decline the offer.

“In spite of all that’s going on this year, this is an exciting time for families, as they learn where their students will spend much of the next three (middle school), four (high school), or six years (elementary school) of their lives,” said Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell. “Meanwhile, I am optimistic that if the Covid and vaccination numbers continue to improve, we’ll be able to begin the school year next fall with instruction looking and feeling as close to normal as possible.”

The enrollment period for submitting applications with priority placement ended on February 5. Families who have yet to apply for a school for their student for next year, can still do so online at ousdapply.schoolmint.net or by reaching out to the District Welcome Center. You can email [email protected] or call/text 510-879-4600. Welcome Center staff members are ready to help families find a school that meets their needs. They are all bilingual, and interpretation is also available by phone for all languages spoken in our community. Offers will continue to be made on a rolling basis depending on space availability at each school. If your student is already enrolled at a school and you plan to remain there next year, you don’t need to take any additional steps.

This is the first year that the District is piloting an equitable enrollment model at District schools, and it’s happening at three schools: Chabot Elementary, Edna Brewer Middle, and Sequoia Elementary. The District’s equitable enrollment community working group continues to meet, and is planning to bring proposals to the Board of Education this summer.

Despite the fact that it’s still five months from the start of next school year, it’s not too early to start building community at your new school. To support this effort, the District is suggesting families post to social media with the name of their student’s new school using the hashtag #iamOUSD. The District and schools will amplify these posts to help spread the excitement. Additionally, on Facebook, there’s a frame you can use with your profile picture. You can find it by searching “I am OUSD” when you change your profile picture. You will see the option to “add frame,” then just search for the title.###About the Oakland Unified School DistrictIn California’s most diverse city, Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is dedicated to creating a learning environment where “Every Student Thrives!” More than half of our students speak a non-English language at home.
