Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth (RJOY) Offers Opportunity to Heal

Oakland’s Restorative Justice Movement is now more important than ever

Restorative Justice in education is a transformative approach that shifts away from punitive disciplinary measures and towards healing and relationship-building. It has proven to be highly effective in reducing suspensions, expulsions, and recidivism rates while improving academic performance and school climate.

Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth (RJOY) has been at the forefront of implementing these practices in Oakland schools, demonstrating significant success in reducing suspensions and expulsions while increasing student GPAs.

RJOY offers a range of services, including training for restorative justice practitioners, youth internship programs, and school-based initiatives focused on truth-telling and racial healing.

Their work, however,  extends beyond schools, aiming to create systemic change. By providing spaces for dialogue, conflict resolution, and community building, RJOY’s programs foster a more inclusive and supportive educational environment that addresses the root causes of conflict and promotes long-term positive outcomes for both students and adults.

Several facilitated groups and training sessions are still available at RJOY this Fall and Winter.

The next and final training opportunity for “Harm and Conflict De-Escalation” for 2024 takes place on December 11 & 12, 2024. During the 2-day training,  participants will experience a dialogue-based process that addresses harm and/or conflict, encouraging self reflection, accountability and healing. Activities also include role play and self reflection exercises.
