Oakland:
- Oakland’s Roots middle school supporters shut down board meeting for two hours
- Hundreds of students, supporters, parents and teachers of Roots International Academy stormed Wednesday’s school board meeting — where closing the East Oakland middle school at the end of the school year was on the agenda — and for about two hours, ran the meeting themselves.
- As LA Teachers Reach A Deal, Denver Authorizes A Strike And Oakland Schedules A Vote
- Meanwhile in Northern California, the Oakland Education Association called for a strike authorization vote to begin Jan. 29. Union members will have four days to vote. The union, which represents around 2,300 teachers throughout the Oakland Unified School District, has been without a contract since July 2017.
- A Tale of Two Cities and Why We Need to Reform Prop 13
- Proposition 13 has devastated California’s education system. And it’s worse than you even think. Like the frog in the slowly boiling pot that doesn’t realize his predicament until it’s too late, I feel like California has become desensitized to its education funding crisis. And unless we clean up our act quickly, we are going to be cooked.
- Oakland Unified Plans to Merge Kaiser and Sankofa Schools As Part of Major Downsizing Effort
- As part of a controversial consolidation effort, Oakland’s school district recently revealed a plan to merge two distinct elementary schools located in different neighborhoods.
- OUSD to vote Monday to close East Oakland school
- The Oakland Unified School District is facing a $30 million deficit and could close as many as 24 schools in the next few years. On Monday the school board will make a final decision on shutting down Roots International Academy located in East Oakland.
- District Board Vote To Close Oakland School Sparks Outrage
- A vocal group of students and teachers expressed their outrage Monday night as the Oakland school board voted to close the first of what could be as many as 24 schools in the district due to budget constraints.
- Elementary Schools for Black Families to Consider Based on the Latest Test Scores, and Why 99% of Black Parents Should Look
- Black children in Oakland attend the lowest performing schools. And given more school closures, it is essential that we find and apply to the best schools for our children before the February 8th application deadline.
- Strike authorization vote called for Oakland teachers
- A strike vote for Oakland teachers is scheduled to begin Tuesday through Friday. This puts teachers one step closer to going out on strike.
- Oakland Unified Teachers Begin Voting On Potential Strike, Fight Against 2nd School Closure
- Educators are holding the vote, which continues outside school hours until Friday, as they seek more student resources, smaller classes and what they’re calling a “living wage” for workers.
- A Quality School in Every Neighborhood: An update on the Citywide Plan and decision to close Roots International Academy
- Our last two Board of Education (BOE) meetings were very emotional given the issues we are grappling with as a community. I appreciate all of the students, families and staff who came to share their perspectives. Here is an update about our larger strategy to ensure a high quality school in every neighborhood and how last night’s decision to close Roots International Academy (“Roots”) fits into that strategy.
- 1Oakland Voices: Adriana
- Adriana, mother, and 1Oakland leader tells her story: Her son has attended both district and charter schools. Her story is not unique, our families need our school system to be responsive to the needs of families and must remember that all students have dreams and deserve to grow, learn, and achieve.
- Connecting with Kyla: Labor Negotiations and Updates
- This is certainly a challenging time for families and staff as the District continues to face extremely difficult decisions about the budget and how best to ensure quality schools in every neighborhood.
- Oakland Unified Schools: ‘We do not want a strike’
- On the heels of this week’s emotional school board meeting where Oakland Unified School District’s board voted to close Roots International Academy, the cash-strapped district is saying they do not want a teacher strike and are seeking an agreement that is “financially responsible.”
- District Dilemma: OUSD begins school closures, shuts down Roots Academy in East Oakland, but advocates say it won’t save money
- OUSD announces closure of Roots International Academy in Oakland – what does it mean for students, and where is the District headed?
- Bay Area district and charter schools strut their stuff side by side in effort to attract students
- As competition from charter schools grows, educators and parents at some district schools are speaking up about the positive programs they offer to local families.
- If You Only Applied to Schools on this List You Should Have a Backup Plan
- Families need to make the school choices by February 8th to be first in line, and they still may not get in. Many schools get more applications than they have seats, and even students in the neighborhood will need options. That is the reality, so you need to check your odds, and if all the schools you are looking at are typically oversubscribed, make sure you apply to more schools.
- Oakland High, Middle, and Elementary Schools that Black Families Should Consider Based on the Latest Test Scores- Deadline to Apply is 2/8
- Black children in Oakland attend the lowest performing schools, and given more school closures, it is essential that we find and apply to the best schools for our children. You only have until February 8th to submit applications.
- California schools help unaccompanied immigrant students combat trauma, language barriers
- José Sánchez crossed three borders on his own to get to Oakland, California when he was just 17. But once here, he found another barrier that proved even more difficult to overcome — graduating high school.
- SoBEO Narrative Series – Rachelle Rogers-Ard
- Our goal is to identify community members of diverse affiliations and amplify stories that make up the fabric and experiences of the Black Education community in Oakland. The narrative of our community should be told in our own words.
- 2nd Annual Black Girl Power Conference
- What better way to kick off Black History Month than by showcasing highlights from the 2nd Annual Black Girl Power Conference where our students honored their stories and tapped into their personal power. Hats off to the African American Female Excellence program for bringing together over 150 girls and young women in grades 6-12 for a day they’ll never forget.
- Rams’ Marcus Peters, a MyClymonds high alumnus, ‘representing Oakland’ in 2019 Super Bowl
- “Marcus is representing Chestnut Street, McClymonds, West Oakland and Oakland. Everyone is really excited about it,” said Brian McGhee, Peters football coach freshman year.
