State of Black Education Oakland (SoBEO), Great School Voices, and our partners invite YOU – the residents of Oakland – to share your opinions about how to MAKE EDUCATION BETTER for Black and Brown students IN OAKLAND.

This year’s election is historic for the East Bay, and not just because one of our own is vying for the White House. In our eyes, this election is most historic as it will be the first election in Oakland’s history where our youth will have a say.  After four years of waiting for this right after the 2020 passage of Measure QQ, Oakland’s 16 and 17 year old students can vote this fall for the OUSD School Board, where that are candidates running in Districts 1, 3, 5, and 7.

As the Founder of Great School Voices, and the Co-Founder of the State of Black Education in Oakland, our brother Dirk Tillotson would be so immeasurably stoked for this. If there is anything that informs his honor and legacy, it is that the great school voices of our youth, our parents, and our community are amplified and heard when it comes to changing the state of Black education.

We want to hear from students, parents, educators, and community members who care about Oakland’s youth!

This survey will contribute to research that SoBEO is supporting alongside our partners, to guide our coverage this fall, and to help us assess and make community-informed recommendations on improving education for Black students in Oakland.
